Introduction to Project B
The new global basketball league, known as Project B, has already secured contracts with several prominent female players and is now turning its attention to men’s basketball. Grady Burnett, a co-founder, revealed that they plan to support established players in extending their careers when the league launches next fall.
Maverick Carter’s Involvement
Burnett confirmed that Maverick Carter, a longtime associate of LeBron James and manager of his business ventures, has rejoined Project B as an advisor and board member. Although a spokesperson for Carter indicated his advisory role, they clarified he has no official position within the league. Carter did not respond to requests for comments.
European Partnerships
Project B is also collaborating with Miško Ražnatović, a European NBA agent known for representing players like Nikola Jokić. The league’s ambition is highlighted by a viral Instagram post featuring Ražnatović, James, and others discussing the new league while on a boat.
Initial Focus on Women’s League
The first public announcement of Project B was for its women’s league, which has signed multiple stars from the WNBA, including Alyssa Thomas and Nneka Ogwumike. The league aims to travel to seven cities across Asia, Europe, and South America, broadcasting games via YouTube and operating from November to April.
Plans for the Men’s League
Following a similar strategy to the women’s league, Project B plans to recruit players from both the NBA and Europe while also focusing on developing young talent. Burnett emphasized that their approach will mirror the successful tactics used for attracting top female players.
Player Equity and Future Contracts
Similar to the women’s side, players in the men’s league will also receive equity. As of now, no male players have been signed, and no direct approaches have been made. Future announcements are anticipated in the summer. It’s crucial to note that NBA players are prohibited from participating in other leagues.
Conversation with LeBron James
Despite speculation, Burnett stated that there have been no discussions with LeBron James regarding his potential involvement with Project B. With James facing free agency at season’s end, his plans for the future remain uncertain. Recently, he indicated he is no longer interested in owning an NBA team. Burnett is focused on building the league’s foundation and will engage with players at the appropriate time.
