Challenges Following Liberty Media’s Acquisition of MotoGP
The transition to Liberty Media’s ownership of MotoGP was always going to come with its share of initial challenges. Dorna had been in charge since 1992, and long-time fans were accustomed to a certain routine that feels disrupted by the introduction of new concepts.
Positive Developments Within MotoGP
However, there have been some commendable advancements. Though not directly related to Liberty’s takeover, the acquisition of the Tech3 team by former Haas F1 boss Guenther Steiner has already brought significant media attention to the series.
Interest from F1 Champions
Following that, there have been reports of four-time F1 champion Max Verstappen expressing interest in owning a MotoGP team, echoing previous interest from seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton. These developments are beneficial, although MotoGP must be cautious about its support classes becoming mere toys for wealthy F1 drivers.
Concerns Over MotogGP’s Direction
Recently, however, negative changes are reportedly being considered. Chief among them is Liberty’s ambition for MotoGP to gain more visibility while relegating Moto2 and Moto3 to the sidelines. Starting next year, these feeder series will be moved to a less prominent area of the paddock, mimicking F1’s treatment of its own lower categories.
Potential Erasure of Historical Achievements
The situation for Moto2 and Moto3 seems even worse. Reports indicate that broadcasters are being instructed to overlook Marc Marquez’s achievements in Moto2 and 125cc classes, referring to him solely as a seven-time MotoGP champion if he secures further titles. This minimization of smaller categories raises significant concerns about erasing the historical contributions of these classes, angering dedicated fans.
The Importance of History in MotoGP
History has been a concern for Liberty Media in its F1 management, where it often overlooks significant achievements. Unlike F1, where lower-tier titles are not recognized as world championships, MotoGP has always embraced multiple classes as integral to its identity. This unique structure is what differentiates it from other motorsport series.
Risks of an Identity Crisis
Liberty’s policy attempts may provoke resistance, as many fans and riders value every accomplishment in their careers. The push to downplay significant achievements harms MotoGP’s identity and perception. While adopting beneficial ideas from F1 is acceptable, there is a crucial balance between progress and undermining the championship’s intrinsic value.
