Liverpool Linked with Centre-Backs Amid Injury Concerns
Liverpool has been considering multiple centre-backs since an attempt to recruit Marc Guehi was blocked last summer.
They face a challenging situation as they may start 2026 with only one senior centre-back available due to injuries
and potential suspensions.
Currently, Giovanni Leoni is out for the entire season after undergoing ACL surgery following an injury sustained on
his debut in September. Joe Gomez is also sidelined with a hamstring injury incurred in a match against Brighton.
Fortunately, Gomez’s injury isn’t expected to keep him out for a long duration, as Captain Virgil van Dijk remains hopeful
for his swift return. However, Gomez missed recent victories over Tottenham and Wolverhampton, making his availability
for upcoming matches uncertain.
If Gomez is unable to play, Liverpool may depend on Van Dijk as their only senior centre-back, as
Ibrahima Konate faces a one-match suspension due to accumulating yellow cards. Konate will need to avoid booking
against Leeds to stay eligible for the Fulham fixture.
Liverpool’s defensive crisis has prompted speculation about potential signings. They initially pursued Guehi, whose
contract expires at the end of the season, but he is currently likely to remain at Crystal Palace until the season’s
conclusion. Other defenders linked to Liverpool include Maxence Lacroix of Crystal Palace and players from Club Brugge,
Celta Vigo, and Brentford.
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock expressed strong support for signing Guehi, citing his leadership and
impressive performances for England. He also rated Lacroix highly, noting his pace and physicality. With Van Dijk on the
verge of turning 35 and Gomez nearing the end of his contract, Liverpool will need to strengthen their defence.
While Guehi is expected to leave Palace, Lacroix is under contract until 2029. Liverpool has room to add Guehi
to their squad, provided they can navigate homegrown quotas and manage their current players effectively.
