The Louisiana casino sector is thriving, demonstrating impressive growth in the bayou region.
August marked a record-breaking month for Louisiana’s casinos, with total revenues reaching $214.8 million, an 11.5% rise from $192.7 million in August 2024.
Following a strong July and substantial numbers in June, the state’s gaming industry appears to be flourishing.
This upward trend persists even after Governor Jeff Landry enacted a bill to increase taxes on sports betting, with the additional funds allocated to support athletics programs at leading public universities.
Moreover, Landry vetoed a bill in June aimed at banning sweepstakes casinos in Louisiana.
Caesars New Orleans Achieves Remarkable Revenue Growth
According to the latest report by the Louisiana State Police, among the 16 casinos in the state, five reported declines in revenue compared to the previous year. One casino’s earnings remained unchanged as it opened only in February this year.
Caesars New Orleans stands out with a remarkable revenue growth of over 21% since July and nearly 37% compared to last year.
Formerly known as Harrah’s New Orleans, the casino has undergone a complete transformation, now boasting a 115,000-square-foot gaming area featuring over 1,300 slot machines and 120 table games.
Lake Charles: The Highlight of Louisiana’s Riverboat Casinos
Riverboat casinos recorded revenues of $160.9 million, reflecting a 9.2% increase from last year and a 6.56% rise from July.
L’Auberge Lake Charles emerged as the top performer, generating over $30 million—a 15.7% increase from the previous year. The top three contributors to Lake Charles’ success include:
- L’Auberge Lake Charles: Approximately $30 million, up 15.7%.
- Golden Nugget Lake Charles: About $27.1 million, reflecting a 5.6% rise.
- Horseshoe Lake Charles: Just over $7 million in August, experiencing nearly a 33% increase.
Following its relocation to land post-Hurricane Laura, Horseshoe Lake Charles now features over 1,000 slot machines, a poker room, hotel accommodations, and a sportsbook.
Prospects for Louisiana Casinos
While the August revenue figures are encouraging, they highlight the need for strategic growth and adaptation within the gaming industry.
Not every casino or area has equally benefited from this growth, indicating potential for further expansion in places like New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport-Bossier.
Last month is significant for Louisiana’s gaming landscape, largely attributable to Lake Charles’ outstanding performance. As casinos continue to innovate and attract visitors, Louisiana’s gaming sector appears poised for sustained growth and success.
