LAS VEGAS — Nelly Korda Returns to Defend Title
The reigning Player of the Year and top-ranked golfer Nelly Korda is back in the Las Vegas area this week to defend her title at the T-Mobile Match Play.
LPGA Tour Steals the Spotlight
This LPGA Tour event has become the main golf attraction in Las Vegas this year, especially as the PGA Tour won’t be hosting any tournaments in the city for the first time in over forty years.
The PGA Tour’s Absence
The PGA Tour’s decision to drop Las Vegas from its schedule, following the end of Shriners Children’s Hospital’s 18-year sponsorship in October, has dealt a significant blow to the city, which is recognized as a golf hub for enthusiasts of all skill levels.
Future Plans for PGA Tour
However, this absence may not be permanent. The PGA Tour is looking to return with a major event in the early part of the year that features top players, but a timeline for this is still unclear and won’t be realized until at least 2027.
Exploring Event Ideas
John Norris, senior vice president of PGA Tour tournaments, noted, “Vegas is a market for big events,” highlighting its appeal with major sports leagues and entertainment venues. Patrick Lindsey, the former executive director of Shriners Children’s Open, suggests that the PGA Tour is considering a unique all-star event for its return.
Scheduling Challenges
Yet, scheduling poses a significant challenge. The Shriners took place in the fall, but with major tournaments concluding and NFL and college seasons in full swing at that time, it struggled to attract top players. Changing the schedule to start the season in January has further complicated future options for Vegas.
LPGA’s Unique Venue
The Match Play is taking place for the fifth consecutive year at the exclusive Shadow Creek Golf Course, which while not designed for large crowds, is known for its stunning scenery and high standards. Korda emphasized the beauty of the course, noting the challenges it presents to players.
The LPGA Tour has not commented publicly on its Vegas future, but Korda aims to win her title again, potentially drawing more attention to the event. The PGA Tour has had memorable moments in Vegas, including Tiger Woods’ first win in 1996. Lindsey believes the city deserves a professional golf event that stands out compared to other markets.
