Manchester United’s Managerial Changes Post-Ferguson
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, Manchester United has undergone several managerial changes, with Ruben Amorim being the most recent permanent manager to lose his position.
Following a strong start from Michael Carrick, questions have arisen about the possibility of him securing the Manchester United job permanently. The club has been cautious in their decision-making, unlike their approach in 2019.
Like Carrick, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer experienced immediate success upon taking over as interim manager in December 2018 after the departure of Jose Mourinho. He achieved a remarkable turnaround, winning his first six league games, including a dramatic comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
Solskjaer was appointed as permanent manager shortly after his impressive start, though reports indicated that the decision had been made weeks in advance during a dinner with CEO Ed Woodward.
The two reportedly met on the anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster, where Solskjaer honored the victims earlier that day. They finalized their agreement before being driven away from the restaurant.
After starting strongly under Solskjaer, the team saw mixed results over two seasons, finishing third and second, but struggled in the 2021/22 season, leading to his dismissal while the team was seventh in the league.
Carrick briefly took over as caretaker before Ralf Rangnick stepped in. Currently, he has more time in charge this season, but a decision on a permanent manager is not expected until the summer. Meanwhile, Zinedine Zidane has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the role, although he may have a verbal agreement to coach the French national team.
