Michael Carrick’s Managerial Decisions
Despite making minimal adjustments to his starting eleven, Michael Carrick, manager of Manchester United, continues to experiment in certain areas. In his first seven games, he has only implemented three lineup changes, two due to injuries. However, he has employed five different left wingers: Patrick Dorgu, Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, and Amad Diallo.
Success with Makeshift Wingers
These players have yielded some notable successes, such as Dorgu’s goals against Manchester City and Arsenal, and both Mbeumo and Fernandes scoring against Tottenham while playing as the nominal left winger. However, none of these players are left wingers by trade, and some may not even prefer playing on that side.
A Short-Term Solution
Carrick’s use of these makeshift players has been effective but feels like a temporary fix. Historically, Manchester United has been known for strong wingers, a tradition that seems to be lacking currently. There appears to be an imbalance in the squad as Carrick continues to find substitutes in a position where the team is traditionally strong.
Team Configuration Challenges
Currently, United has two players who thrive as right wingers, Amad and Mbeumo, and three who function better as attacking midfielders, such as Cunha and Fernandes. Notably, there’s a scarcity of players who naturally fit the left-wing role. The squad’s configuration, influenced by former manager Ruben Amorim’s tactical choices, leaves major questions unanswered, regardless of Carrick’s future.
Assessing Squad Balance
Carrick acknowledges the need for a well-balanced squad to maximize flexibility but remains uncomplaining about his current options. While he believes they can still pose threats from the left, the apparent lack of genuine width in play, notably against Crystal Palace and Everton, has been problematic.
Future Considerations
Although current statistics may paint a different picture, the lack of effectiveness in width is evident. For a more cohesive strategy, United would benefit from the contributions of a true left winger. Carrick’s team dynamics have been somewhat challenged, especially since key players like Dorgu are currently sidelined due to injuries.
Investment in a Left Winger
While United manages to navigate without a pure left winger currently, the situation demands consideration for future acquisitions. The club might need to invest considerable resources in securing a quality left winger, particularly as they also face the prospect of rebuilding their midfield. As Carrick adapts his tactical approach, the need for a proper left winger may become increasingly crucial for the next season.
