Mariners Aim for Success in Spring Training
The Seattle Mariners are gearing up for spring training, eager to capitalize on the achievements from last season.
Strong Playoff Performance
Following a historic playoff run, the Mariners are considered early contenders to represent the American League in the upcoming World Series.
Roster Changes
The team’s roster has remained largely stable during the offseason, although it faced some significant player losses. Second baseman and designated hitter Jorge Polanco, along with third baseman Eugenio Suárez, will not be returning. However, the Mariners have bolstered their lineup by acquiring utility player Brendan Donovan, veteran outfielder Rob Refsnyder, and left-handed reliever Jose A. Ferrer.
Addressing the Bullpen Concerns
While the previous season’s roster nearly led them to their first World Series, questions linger about whether they have strengthened their bullpen sufficiently. MLB Network insider Jon Morosi shared his concerns during an appearance on Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob. He queried, “Have they reinforced the bullpen enough to enhance that segment of the team?”
High-Leverage Arms
The Mariners possess a robust collection of high-leverage pitchers, including righty Matt Brash, lefty Gabe Speier, and two-time All-Star closer Andrés Muñoz. Following a strong 2025 season, right-hander Eduard Bazardo may also add depth to the bullpen. There’s optimism surrounding newcomer Ferrer, who is catching the attention of analysts.
Injury Precautions
While potential injuries to key bullpen players could put the Mariners at a disadvantage, this is a challenge faced by many teams. As for filling out the remaining bullpen slots, they have a mix of familiar faces and newcomers vying for a spot. Right-handers Carlos Vargas, Casey Legumina, and Emerson Hancock are in contention after spending time with the major league team last season.
Emerging Talent
Among the less-known players are right-handers Cole Wilcox, Yosver Zulueta, and Alex Hoppe. Zulueta, a January acquisition from the Cincinnati Reds, could be one to watch closely this spring. With experience in 19 games and a notable pitching arsenal, he might prove invaluable as the season progresses.
