Mariners Secure Victory with Dramatic Walk-Off
SEATTLE — On Saturday night, the Mariners found themselves in a critical situation with the game on the line and no one they would rather have at the plate than J.P. Crawford.
In the bottom of the ninth, with the game tied against a division rival and the bases loaded, Crawford stepped up. The seasoned shortstop delivered an opposite-field RBI single into left field, scoring Cole Young and providing the Mariners with an 8-7 win over the Astros, all before a crowd of 43,294 fans.
This marked Crawford’s eighth career walk-off since joining the Mariners in 2019, tying him with Mitch Haniger for the most in franchise history. As the longest-tenured player on the team, his contributions have been pivotal during some of the franchise’s key moments.
“Confidence and believing in myself,” Crawford shared. “It goes a long way.” This clutch moment followed a two-run single he executed earlier in the fifth inning, further demonstrating his ability to handle high-pressure situations.
Crawford’s performance with the bases loaded has been impressive; he boasts a career batting average of .390 with a .766 slugging percentage when the stakes are high, including six grand slams and 88 RBIs over 91 plate appearances.
Crawford’s pivotal hits helped the Mariners rally after conceding seven runs in a row, showcasing the team’s determination. “The mindset is chip away,” he explained. “We keep drawing our walks and get a couple of big hits, and we’re right back in it.”
Even with a disadvantage in total hits—17 to the Mariners’ seven—the team’s resilience shone through, indicating a deep-rooted tenacity. Manager Dan Wilson praised the effort, emphasizing the heart with which the team plays. Despite facing challenges at the season’s start due to shoulder issues, Crawford’s resolve and contributions have continued to be vital for Seattle.
