Mark Rolfing’s Journey and Legacy in Golf
A Pivotal Moment in 1985
In 1985, Mark Rolfing had a career-defining moment during the Isuzu Kapalua International, a golf event he founded as the marketing director for the West Maui course. His exceptional tee shot on the par-3 17th hole earned him not only the closest-to-the-pin prize but also a cherry red Isuzu Impulse.
The Start of a Broadcasting Career
The shot led to an unexpected interview opportunity with Lee Trevino and Vin Scully in the announcers’ booth, which marked the beginning of Rolfing’s impressive 40-year career as a golf analyst on national television. His advocacy for golf and sports in Maui has been ongoing since he and his wife Debi moved there in 1975.
Protecting The Sentry Tournament
At 76, Rolfing is facing a critical challenge to save The Sentry tournament, a centerpiece of his legacy in Maui. After 27 years at the Kapalua Plantation Course, the PGA Tour had to cancel the event for January 2026 due to drought-induced issues that rendered the course unplayable. The future of this prestigious tournament is now uncertain.
Seeking Resolution and Support
Mark is determined to bring The Sentry back to Kapalua in 2027, emphasizing the need to address ongoing water litigation and rally support from PGA Tour players, including Tiger Woods, who leads a committee working on the tournament’s future.
A Career Built on Vision
Rolfing’s impact on golf in Hawaii began when he rose to prominence as a golf pro and marketing director at Kapalua Bay Course. He successfully pitched to ESPN to broadcast the tournament in 1985, showcasing Maui’s beauty and boosting its visibility. His friendship with Arnold Palmer further solidified his standing in the golf community.
Health Challenges and Resilience
In 2015, Rolfing faced a life-threatening diagnosis of stage 4 salivary gland cancer. However, following a successful surgery and radiation treatment, he returned to broadcasting in 2016, sharing his inspiring journey. Today, he hopes to ensure the tournament’s survival for the sake of Maui and its charitable endeavors.
