Matheus Cunha Discusses Move to Manchester United
Matheus Cunha has shared how Ruben Amorim played a pivotal role in his decision to transfer to Manchester United, following his £62.5million switch from Wolves. This marks Cunha’s first interview after finalizing the deal.
Exclusive reports from Mail Sport confirmed Cunha’s agreement to join the 20-time champions of England at the beginning of June. The 26-year-old successfully passed his medical earlier last month, positioning him as United’s first major acquisition in a summer focused on rebuilding under Amorim.
Cunha, who scored 33 goals in 92 matches for Wolves, elaborated on how Amorim’s influence made his decision to join Manchester United easier during his first interview post-transfer. He expressed his strong belief in Amorim’s capabilities, noting, “I hope he succeeds in conquering the world like he did in Portugal.” He added, “All our discussions made my decision easier.”
Discussing his dream move, Cunha stated, “It’s hard to find the words to describe these moments. When you’ve always dreamed of playing here, it becomes easier to make the choice.” He elaborated on his admiration for the club, saying, “For me, no one else is like United… This is a dream come true; it’s hard to comprehend that I’m here.” He reminisced about watching Premier League matches at his grandmother’s house as a child, emphasizing how his early experiences shaped his passion for the club.
Cunha cited former United stars like Wayne Rooney as significant influences on his football career, mentioning, “Rooney was a big example for me. He always gave everything on the pitch.” He also acknowledged the profound impact that other legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, and Paul Scholes had on him growing up.
Although United will reportedly pay Wolves in three installments of £20.85m over the next two years, Cunha is eager to step up, having enjoyed a strong season with Wolves, where he scored 15 goals and provided six assists in 33 Premier League appearances, far surpassing any United player’s tally.
Cunha’s move comes amid a tough season for United, managing only 44 league goals—the lowest in their Premier League history. With forward positions needing reinforcement, Cunha’s arrival may signal the potential for a revitalized attack under Amorim, especially with several current players facing possible departures.
