Laurent Mekies: A Relentless Pursuit of Success
Attaining the peak in any sport is often celebrated as a moment for reflection and contentment. However, for Laurent Mekies, the new team principal of Red Bull, there is only an intense, ongoing drive to progress. “There is no such thing as having made it; you always feel you are surviving,” he states. “You think you should have accomplished more yesterday and aim to do more next week. You never feel you’ve made it—never, never, never.”
Taking the Reins of Red Bull
Having assumed leadership of a highly successful Formula One team two months ago after Christian Horner’s dismissal, Mekies faces a challenging and highly-visible role at the age of 48. His inaugural achievement came during the last race in Monza, where Max Verstappen clinched Red Bull’s first victory under his management. With two decades of experience in the sport, does Mekies allow himself time to bask in success?
Short-Lived Satisfaction
When asked about moments of satisfaction, he reflects, “If you feel you’ve made it, that’s only a fleeting feeling after a win. By Monday morning, it’s over.” Mekies, strikingly approachable, opts to conduct his first full interview with British media alongside the interviewer rather than from his desk, indicating a sincere desire to connect.
A Genuine Connection
His responses are thoughtful rather than scripted, reflecting his engineering background. Mekies leans in when making points, occasionally touching the interviewer’s arm to ensure understanding, which shows his commitment to connecting on a human level. “Every race weekend, you feel privileged. You know you have the best seat in the house,” he shares, expressing both excitement and a sense of wonder.
A Journey from Fan to Principal
Mekies reminisces about his childhood in France, citing the first race he attended in 1988. “You get immersed in the atmosphere, believing it’s the most fantastic sport in the world, yet it seems so far away.” Undeterred, he pursued an education in mechanical engineering, followed by an internship that he describes as life-changing. His career in Formula One began in 2001, leading him through various roles before becoming safety director at the FIA.
Challenges Ahead
His recent transition back to Red Bull has brought to light the internal issues the team is navigating, especially after significant controversies surrounding Horner’s management and other team personnel departures. Mekies will not find an easy path, particularly given the powerful Verstappen faction within the team. His diplomatic approach to managing relationships is evident as he emphasizes a focus on creating the fastest cars, stating, “When you do that, everything gets sorted.”
A Promising Future
Initial reactions to Mekies’ leadership are positive, with Verstappen and advisor Helmut Marko praising his technical insight and open communication style. Mekies’ more collaborative approach is noted as a significant shift from his predecessor, and he recognizes the challenges ahead while maintaining an unwavering focus on the goal: to return to winning in the traditional Red Bull manner.
