Messi Extends Stay at Inter Miami
On Thursday, Lionel Messi officially signed a contract extension with Inter Miami, ensuring his presence at the club through the end of the 2028 MLS season.
Messi, aged 38, first arrived in Miami in July 2023 as a Designated Player under a groundbreaking 2½-year contract, setting new benchmarks for both the league and the franchise.
The club shared the news via a video showing Messi signing the contract at what will soon be the site of Miami’s eagerly anticipated new stadium, Miami Freedom Park.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Messi stated, “I’m really happy to stay here and continue this project, which has transformed from a dream into a wonderful reality—playing in this stadium at Miami Freedom Park.”
Club co-owner Jorge Mas expressed his aspiration for Messi to inaugurate the new stadium in 2026 as the team transitions from its current venue in Fort Lauderdale. Inter Miami is set to complete the 2025 season at Chase Stadium before launching the 2026 season at Miami Freedom Park.
Mas remarked, “Leo signing through 2028 is a tribute to our incredible city, and we look forward to creating new stories at Miami Freedom Park.” Meanwhile, Messi continues to elevate the team’s status, leading Miami to trophies and record attendances.
As Messi prepares for playoff matches against Nashville SC, the club anticipates clinching the 2025 MLS Cup. With the extension, Messi reaffirms his commitment, even as teammates like Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets plan to retire after the season.
