DETROIT — Rookie standout Nolan McLean showcased once again on Tuesday that he can helm the New York Mets’ starting rotation into September and potentially the postseason.
The Mets are fortunate in this regard, especially since Kodai Senga was once expected to fulfill this role. However, after returning from the injured list in July, Senga has struggled on the mound, leading the Mets to mull over his next start.
Discussions about Senga’s future include the possibility of requesting a minor league assignment, though sources indicate that Senga may not agree to this without consent due to his contract stipulations. Senga expressed on Tuesday night his readiness to do whatever is necessary to improve and assist the team.
As of Tuesday, the Mets were evaluating their options regarding Senga. A demotion would mark a notable decline for him, especially after his impressive showing as an All-Star and runner-up for the NL Rookie of the Year in 2023. Despite a promising start to the current season, Senga has seen his ERA balloon to 6.56 in recent innings. The Mets do have alternatives in David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Jonah Tong, and McLean, with prospect Brandon Sproat waiting in Triple-A.
Looking ahead, the Mets’ rotation remains uncertain. Holmes is set to pitch against the Tigers on Wednesday, followed by Peterson’s planned start against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday. Rookie Tong is expected to follow on Saturday, with Senga likely scheduled for Sunday.
Senga hasn’t completed six innings in a start since June 6, and the Mets need to rectify his performance while also assisting Sean Manaea, who has a 5.60 ERA. Manager Carlos Mendoza indicated flexibility as they continue discussions about their rotation decisions.
Given McLean’s impressive emergence, the Mets, who currently lead the Reds by five games for the final wild-card slot, might afford to skip Senga’s next outing. In just four starts, McLean has already established himself as a crucial pitcher for the team. His latest performance, which contributed to the Mets’ 12-5 win over the Tigers, further affirmed his capabilities, as he adjusted his strategy and dominated after a rocky start.
Nolan McLean of the @Mets is the second MLB pitcher to go 4-0 with a sub-1.50 ERA and 25+ strikeouts over his first 4 career starts …
Mendoza praised McLean’s ability to make adjustments on the mound and maintain composure in high-pressure situations. Despite the high expectations placed upon him, McLean remains focused on his role within the team, striving to secure as many outs as possible. Catcher Luis Torrens echoed this, noting that McLean possesses the charisma and attitude of a superstar, making him a valuable asset for the Mets given the current struggles of their expected rotation leaders.
