Championship Victory for Mia Williams
Penn-Trafford’s Mia Williams made a significant mark in high school tennis by clinching a WPIAL championship as a freshman in 2022. On November 1, 2025, she brought her high school career to a remarkable close at the Hershey Racquet Club, winning the PIAA Class 3A singles championship.
Final Match Highlights
In the finals, Williams showcased her skills by defeating West Chester Henderson’s Erika Dunwoody in straight sets with scores of 6-3, 6-0. “I didn’t come out this weekend with the goal to win states,” said Williams. “I just wanted to enjoy the last weekend of my high school career and play my best game.”
A Journey of Resilience
Williams demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout the tournament. After facing Parkland’s Alexandria Warsing, the defending champion who had eliminated her in the previous year, she triumphed with a solid 6-2, 6-3 victory. “There were low expectations on me, allowing me to play freely,” she noted.
Facing the Defending Champion
In the semifinals, Williams confronted the reigning state champion, Addison Lindsay. This match proved to be a tough challenge, yet Williams prevailed in straight sets, winning 7-6 (4), 6-4. “The pressure was more on her,” Williams reflected. “I focused on enjoying the game as if it were my last match.”
Gabby Dusi’s Journey
Belle Vernon’s Gabby Dusi, a two-time defending WPIAL champion, also competed in the finals, finishing as the runner-up in Class 2A for the second consecutive year after losing to District 2 champion Cara Evans. Dusi had entered the finals after a strong semifinal performance against Paige Patsy.
WPIAL Double Teams Performance
The WPIAL Class 2A doubles champions, Veronica Zinski and Marann Buckanovich, finished as runners-up after a loss in the finals. Similarly, WPIAL Class 3A runners-up Brooke Henderson and Alexandra Merkel could not secure a win in their championship match, falling to Downingtown East. Meanwhile, WPIAL champions Jackie Tang and Michelle Yang secured third place after defeating their District 1 adversaries.
