According to Sky Sports analyst Jamie Carragher, Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool among the Premier League’s elite foreign players, with only Thierry Henry rated higher.
Liverpool announced Salah’s departure Tuesday night, confirming he will leave at the end of the season as a free agent, a year earlier than his contract’s expiration.
During his nine years at Anfield, Salah has clinched every major trophy. Carragher believes his exit signifies “the end of an extraordinary era” for the club.
Carragher expressed concern that the league will soon lose “another world-class, generational talent,” following Kevin De Bruyne’s exit from Manchester City for Napoli last year.
Since Salah’s £34 million transfer from Roma in 2017, he holds the record for the most Premier League goals and assists (189 + 92), and Carragher argues that he has eclipsed Cristiano Ronaldo’s legacy within the competition.
“In the realm of overseas attacking players in England, only Thierry Henry surpasses Salah’s output and consistency,” Carragher stated in his column for The Telegraph.
Salah’s Legacy at Liverpool
Salah will depart as Liverpool’s third all-time leading scorer, behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt, and one of the most successful players of the Premier League era. He has secured two Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup, and a League Cup during his tenure.
A Key Role Under Klopp
Joining Liverpool in 2017, Salah’s arrival marked a turning point for the club, helping them win multiple titles under Jurgen Klopp, including ending a 35-year wait for a league title. Carragher noted that Salah’s prolific goal scoring was pivotal to Liverpool’s resurgence.
A Farewell Worth Remembering
With his last match at Anfield against Brentford on May 24 likely marking his final appearance for Liverpool, Carragher hopes for a more dramatic send-off. He stated that fans envision a farewell that culminates in a Champions League final, considering Salah’s competitive spirit and mindset.
