New Hampshire Set to Introduce Slot Machines

Slot machines are anticipated to arrive at select New Hampshire casinos by year-end, part of a broader initiative to enhance revenue for the state and local charities.

In conjunction with the introduction of these machines, the state is eliminating current betting limits, allowing players to place larger wagers during gaming sessions.

Governor Kelly Ayotte approved these significant changes into law, aiming to boost state funds by expanding its gaming sector through what is known as the trailer bill.

However, some legislators express concerns about the shift. Senator Cindy Rosenwald acknowledges the objective but remains wary of the state’s growing dependency on gambling revenue, questioning its sustainability in economic downturns.

Reports from the New Hampshire Lottery Commission indicate a steady rise in revenue from various gaming activities, which surged from $8.3 million in 2022 to $35.2 million in 2024. Slot machines are expected to further amplify these earnings.

While some lawmakers are optimistic about the expansion, others are doubtful regarding the allocation of casino revenue, suggesting that charitable contributions should arise from voluntary donations rather than be derived from gambling profits.

The state’s decision to remove betting limits aims to attract high-stakes players, creating a more lucrative gaming environment. With expectations of new “destination casinos,” proponents believe this will positively impact tourism and state revenue while ensuring that gaming operations do not dominate any single town.
