Manchester United intends to engage in further discussions with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick before making a decision about their interim head coach. According to Sky Sports News, there is a possibility that both could have roles in the new management structure.
Director of football Jason Wilcox had informal preliminary talks with the former players on Tuesday, and it is believed they are both interested in rejoining the first team.
United is also looking at other candidates for the interim position until the end of the season, including Ruud Van Nistelrooy, who stepped in after Erik Ten Haag was dismissed in October 2024, before Ruben Amorim took over the reins.
The club seems poised to appoint someone on a short-term basis through the season, allowing them to concentrate on a more permanent hire in the summer when higher-caliber coaches may be available.
Coaches such as Oliver Glasner, Marco Silva, and Andoni Iraola will have their current contracts ending this season. Additionally, Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann, and Mauricio Pochettino may be free after their international obligations conclude at the World Cup.
While no meetings have been slated with Carrick and Solskjaer for Wednesday, the focus is on Darren Fletcher’s inaugural game in charge against Burnley. Discussions regarding the interim position are expected to intensify later in the week.
Solskjaer Preferred as Interim Option
Sky Sports News’ football correspondent Rob Dorsett noted that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would generate significant interest if he returned. After being let go by Manchester United in November 2021, he remains extremely popular among fans. Wilcox has indicated that Solskjaer is keen on a return to Old Trafford, making him a leading candidate.
