Sony Revives “S.W.A.T.” with New Spin-off
Sony Pictures Television has announced an unexpected revival with the spin-off series “S.W.A.T. Exiles.” This decision was revealed on Sunday, highlighting Sony’s knack for resurrecting its seemingly canceled shows.
Shemar Moore Returns
In the new venture, “Shemar Moore” will reprise his role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson in this 10-episode sequel. The announcement follows just two days after the original series concluded its eight-season run on CBS on May 16, despite “S.W.A.T. Exiles” yet to be sold to any networks.
Paving the Way for New Partnerships
During the LA Screenings event for international buyers, Sony expressed its commitment to finding suitable platforms for the new series, emphasizing its aim to connect with both the existing fanbase and new audiences. They plan to pitch the show to various streaming services and networks.
Potential Distribution Partners
This might involve networks like CBS or its affiliate Paramount+, or even Netflix, which currently hosts the “S.W.A.T.” library.
The Bumpy Journey of “S.W.A.T.”
CBS had previously announced the cancellation of “S.W.A.T.” after its eighth season with a total of 163 episodes. This marks the third time the series has faced cancellation, having previously been revived for another season after similar announcements. The recent cancellation couldn’t be undone due to lack of a viable deal, leading Sony to forge ahead independently with “S.W.A.T. Exiles.”
Devotion to Quality Content
In a statement, Sony highlighted its dedication to producing quality content and making the most of its intellectual properties amidst a changing television landscape. Production for the new series is slated to begin this summer in Los Angeles, ensuring job preservation for the local 200-member crew key to the original’s success.
Exciting New Directions
The spin-off’s premise unfolds after a crucial mission falters, forcing Hondo out of retirement to lead an experimental SWAT team of young recruits. He faces challenges in uniting the squad while maintaining safety in the city. Executive producer and showrunner Jason Ning will collaborate with Moore and others to carry on the series legacy, marked by thrilling action and heartfelt storytelling.
