Newcastle United has faced a challenging summer, as excitement from last season has faded while aspirations for top signings remain unfulfilled.
The Carabao Cup champions from last season have welcomed Anthony Elanga for a transfer fee of £55 million, addressing one of Eddie Howe‘s major issues. However, the list of failed attempts to acquire new first-team players is considerable, and Alexander Isak is now also expressing a desire to leave.
Challenges in Securing a New Striker
Newcastle are struggling to find and attract a new No. 9. According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, there’s a strong possibility that Isak could depart the club this month. Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson has emerged as a potential candidate for the striker position for Newcastle, but several other issues also loom as Howe readies for the upcoming season.
Newcastle’s Target List Expanding
Meanwhile, Newcastle is trying to recover from their challenging situation. Manchester United has secured a deal for Benjamin Sesko, with the RB Leipzig striker favoring a move to United. This deal is nearing completion.
As Isak’s departure seems increasingly likely, Newcastle is exploring other options but must also prioritize signing a defender this summer. Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi remains a top target for Howe, although recent reports indicate that while Newcastle is interested, an official approach has not yet been made per Lee Ryder.
Considering Alternative Options
With Liverpool also interested in the £40m-valued defender, Newcastle must act quickly to avoid losing out on another Premier League transfer battle. As a backup option, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that Newcastle has verbally agreed with Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, although securing his transfer will be challenging.
Thiaw as an Ideal Addition for Newcastle
Thiaw, one of the most promising defenders in Italian football, has previously seen a rejected €30m (£26m) offer from Newcastle. Reports suggest that Milan might hold out for a deal in the range of £30 million. Given the costs involved, Thiaw could potentially be a more advantageous signing than Sesko, particularly as he possesses the physical attributes needed for success in the Premier League.
Closing Thoughts on Newcastle’s Strategy
Newcastle requires a striker, but it’s crucial that they make the right decision without overexposing themselves financially. A shrewd investment of around £30m on Thiaw would be a positive step forward for Howe’s side as they prepare for a competitive season ahead.
