ATLANTA, Georgia – The exact amount of NIL money earned by the players participating in the Sweet 16 at State Farm Arena is not publicly known, but it likely exceeds eight figures. Players tend to avoid discussing their NIL earnings, possibly fearing backlash. However, many assert that the financial aspect has not diminished their dedication to their coaches or teammates.
Auburn’s fifth-year center, Dylan Cardwell, demonstrates his unwavering commitment to his college and team. He mentioned that NIL has played a crucial role in enabling this commitment. “For me, it’s been life-changing,” Cardwell shared on Thursday, expressing his belief that NIL has been advantageous for every player.
Cardwell elaborated on the opportunities NIL provides, allowing players like Johni Broome to remain in college longer without rushing into the NBA, which can be a cutthroat environment. “It’s a tradeoff: Do I risk going in the late first round or second round, or do I return to school to refine my skills?” he stated.
He emphasized that NIL funds have transformed not just his life but also those of countless players and their families. “NIL is one of the best developments in college basketball history. I believe it could use some regulation, but I’m thankful for the chance to benefit from our hard work,” Cardwell concluded.
Coaches and players also face the complexities of unrestricted transfers, a change that has made recruiting more challenging. After the NCAA permitted one-time transfers without penalties in 2021, a court ruling removed even that limitation. Jaemyn Brakefield, who transferred from Duke to Ole Miss, shared how NIL enabled him to significantly impact his family’s lives, particularly in moving his brother out of a difficult situation.

Coach Bruce Pearl, much like Michigan State’s Tom Izzo, supports players receiving compensation but acknowledges the significant changes in recruitment dynamics. “It’s become far more transactional,” Pearl remarked. He pointed out that the longstanding values of graduation rates and player development seem to hold less weight today, yet he remains committed to prioritizing those aspects.
In Pearl’s view, despite the influence of NIL, the core responsibilities of coaches towards student-athletes should remain unchanged. “We are still here to coach and guide them, ensuring they leave not just with degrees but also the skills to succeed beyond basketball,” he stated.
