Huff’s New Chapter with the 49ers
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — For nearly five months, Bryce Huff, the new defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers, anticipated a trade from the Philadelphia Eagles. Uncertain when and where he might go, he focused on staying fit while hoping for a favorable outcome.
Trade to San Francisco
Huff’s wish came true on May 30 when he was traded to the 49ers for a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft. “I had a few places in mind for a trade,” Huff said. “Staying in my routine helped me remain optimistic, and I’m thrilled it was San Francisco, given my familiarity with the scheme.”
A Shift in Defensive Schemes
This trade allowed Huff to leave a Philadelphia scheme that didn’t fit him as well as the one he thrived in under defensive coordinator Robert Saleh in New York from 2021 to 2023. After an impressive 2023 season, where he tallied 10 sacks with a high pressure rate, Huff signed a three-year, $51 million deal with the Eagles. However, the new system asked him to play a stand-up linebacker role, diverging from his previous experience.
Adjustment Challenges
The transition came with challenges, leading to a less productive season for Huff, who finished with merely 2.5 sacks. “I learned a lot during that time but ultimately, it just didn’t work out. Now, I’m focused on being a 49er and doing what I can to help this team succeed,” he explained.
Impressive Start in San Francisco
Though Huff has just started with the 49ers, he is already fitting back into Saleh’s defense. While he may not be an every-down end, the team has carved out a specific role for him focused on pass rushing, especially after significant changes in the defensive line during the offseason.
Rebuilding the Defensive Line
San Francisco revamped its defensive line by cutting three starters and drafting new talent, including end Mykel Williams. This restructuring allows Huff to leverage his strengths effectively, particularly in pass-rushing scenarios, as he joins the line with established players like Nick Bosa.
Fulfilling Potential
Saleh expressed high hopes for Huff, noting his ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks. Coach Kyle Shanahan even compared Huff’s quickness off the line to former standout Dee Ford. “He’s our best get-off-the-ball guy since Dee Ford,” Shanahan remarked. Huff aims to capitalize on this fresh start, looking to harness the potential that led him from an undrafted rookie to a significant investment in 2024.
