St George’s Celebrates Colts Cup Match Draw
Wellington Oval (St George’s won toss): Match drawn
Isaiah O’Brien and Luke Horan shone with impressive half-centuries, leading St George’s to retain the Colts Cup Match in a high-scoring draw yesterday.
O’Brien scored 87 runs off 76 balls, featuring four fours and seven sixes, while Horan contributed a swift 64 from 36 balls, including three fours and seven sixes. St George’s set a total of 334 for six in 62 overs, bolstered by captain Oyinde Bascome’s 80 runs.
Bascome, named MVP, also took two wickets, one of which was Zeri Tomlinson, who scored 51 in Somerset’s reply of 172 for three, resulting in a stalemate. Opener Callum MacFarlane top-scored for Somerset with 56 runs.
O’Brien, dismissed while attempting a charge against Callum McIntosh, expressed disappointment at missing a century. He stated, “It would have been an ideal way to conclude my Colts Cup Match career. Our batting was stellar, and restricting them early was crucial in keeping the trophy.”
Horan expressed optimism about the match’s impact on their upcoming game, saying, “Getting a fifty in my last colts game feels fantastic. My partnership with Isaiah swung the game in our favor, and retaining the trophy is significant for the club.”
A historic moment occurred for Brianna Ray as she became the first female cricketer to participate in the Colts Cup Match, achieving two wickets. Ray handled her debut well, taking her first wicket via an lbw decision against opener Logan Jones.
Ray reflected on her experience, stating, “It was special to bowl my first ball. I know how much this means for young girls wanting to play cricket. I had to work hard for my wickets but it was all a great learning experience.” She expressed a desire to excel further for potential future matches.
