Spring Training Overview
The San Diego Padres kicked off their Spring Training for the 2026 season on a positive note. Reports indicate that all pitchers and catchers arrived on time and in good health, with several position players also showing up early and injury-free.
Presidential Remarks
As players reunited after months apart, A.J. Preller, the president of baseball operations, held a media session on the opening day and reiterated his intention to acquire one or two more bats and an additional starting pitcher for the team.
Manager’s Priorities
New manager Craig Stammen made his initial comments, highlighting the importance of communication and relationships as his top priorities. He quickly announced Luis Campusano as the backup catcher behind Freddy Fermin and stated that newly signed Miguel Andujar would also be working at first base, alongside utility player Sung-Mun Song.
Pitching Rotation Insights
Kyle Hart will initially be given a chance as a starter, but no other pitchers will be stretched out for starting roles at this point. While Song has opportunities at both first base and in the outfield, the team is still looking for a platoon partner for first baseman Gavin Sheets and additional rotation options.
Recent Signings
In a surprising turn of events, Preller signed outfielder/dh/1B Nick Castellanos to a one-year deal at league minimum just one day before official team workouts began. Additionally, right-handed starters Griffin Canning and German Marquez also joined the team, both looking to recover from previous injuries and regain their form.
Depth and Future Moves
Instead of merely adding two bats and one pitcher, Preller brought in two of each, enhancing the team’s depth. However, with only one available spot on the 40-man roster after signing Andujar, adjustments will be necessary to accommodate these new players.
Looking Ahead
The Padres have signed various minor league players and secured a pre-agreement for the 2027 International class with highly regarded pitcher Yoel King from the Dominican Republic. Several team members will also be departing for the World Baseball Classic, including reliever Alek Jacob and established stars like Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr.
