Toronto Blue Jays Pitching Concerns
TORONTO – On Sunday morning, as pitching coach Pete Walker considered the potential pitching surplus for the Toronto Blue Jays if Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios, Shane Bieber, and Yimi Garcia all return to health, he remarked that such challenges are “great problems to have.”
“Maintaining a five-man rotation throughout the season is nearly impossible,” he stated. “We almost managed it in 2016, but that’s rare. Thus, depth is essential. We have strong pitch options, and while I try not to plan too far ahead, we do have strategies for each pitcher. Adjustments are always necessary as unexpected events occur in the majors. Having an excess of pitching is not a disadvantage, and we’ll adapt as needed.”
Injury Strikes
These thoughts became particularly relevant Monday evening when Cody Ponce, after 2.1 innings in his return to the majors, suffered an awkward fall while attempting to field a grounder from Jake McCarthy and had to be carted off the field.
Ponce informed manager John Schneider that he believed he hyperextended his right knee during the play. An MRI was being conducted as the Blue Jays concluded a rough 14-5 loss to the Colorado Rockies, and the team was anxiously awaiting results, given the potential ramifications for the pitching staff.
Initial Impressions
“It’s unfortunate,” commented manager John Schneider. “This was his first appearance after overcoming considerable challenges—let’s hope for the best news tomorrow.” Ponce had previously made his big-league debut on October 3, 2021, where he struggled against Cincinnati, and the Blue Jays signed him to a $30 million, three-year deal, hoping to harness his potential.
In his return, Ponce showcased impressive velocity, reaching 95.9 mph with his fastball, complemented by his slider, changeup, and curveball. He was initially dominating the Rockies, recording 15 missed swings on 29 pitches before his injury, which stemmed from a mishap while fielding. He managed to get up briefly with help, but he looked visibly distressed while leaving the field, marking a disappointing end to a highly anticipated outing.
Future Implications
His injury raises significant questions for the Blue Jays regarding their rotation, especially with Berrios, Yesavage, and Bieber a few weeks away from returning. Their depth at triple-A Buffalo is also limited, with traditional starters scarce, prompting the signing of Austin Voth for rotation innings. The Blue Jays may need to consider other options as the severity of Ponce’s injury becomes clearer.
In the coming weeks, the Blue Jays might manage their rotation to cover for the fifth starter, only needing one on April 8. However, they risk the possibility of overextending their starters, which could deteriorate their bullpen health. After a robust performance from the Rockies, whose offense overwhelmed the Blue Jays’ bullpen, Schneider acknowledged the urgent need for re-evaluation.
