Red Sox Trade for Contreras and Explore Infield Options
The Boston Red Sox have actively sought a right-handed hitter to enhance their infield, and they recently secured Willson Contreras in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals. Contreras is likely to take on a regular position at first base or as the designated hitter. Despite this acquisition, Alex Speier from the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox are still pursuing additional powerful hitters for their infield, naming four potential targets in particular.
Targeting Bregman and Bichette
Speier’s list includes free agents Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette, along with trade options like Texas third baseman Isaac Paredes and Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte. While other alternatives exist, these four names are currently at the forefront of Boston’s efforts.
Bregman’s History with the Red Sox
Bregman had a notable season with the Red Sox, hitting .273/.360/.462 in 114 games and making his third All-Star appearance. After opting out of his three-year deal, a return to Boston appears likely, though there are concerns regarding the team’s willingness to commit to long-term contracts. Bregman is seeking a deal longer than the three years he previously signed, which may conflict with the Red Sox’s preference for shorter agreements.
Bichette’s Situation
Bichette recently had a video meeting with the Red Sox and is viewed as the premier infielder available this offseason. He boasted a .311/.357/.483 line for the Blue Jays over 139 games. Although he does not fit as neatly into the Red Sox’s plans as Bregman does, Bichette’s flexibility to potentially play second base could be beneficial. However, both players will likely seek lengthy contracts, with Bichette being younger and possibly providing a better value over time.
Trade Considerations for Ketel Marte
On the trade front, Marte has emerged as a top target despite the Diamondbacks indicating they want to retain him. With impressive stats over the past two seasons, he has piqued the interest of several teams, including the Red Sox. Though trading for him might be challenging due to the acquisition cost, Marte’s affordable contract makes him an appealing option for Boston willing to consider substantial trades.
Potential Trade with Isaac Paredes
Paredes offers another potential option. He had a solid performance, hitting .254/.352/.458 last year and doesn’t carry the same star status as some of the other targets. His affordability and controllable contract make him an attractive target for the Red Sox, who are equipped to enhance their roster without long-term commitments. The Astros have expressed reluctance to trade him, yet their infield situation might necessitate considering offers from interested teams like the Red Sox.
