Cincinnati Reds Target Kyle Schwarber
The Cincinnati Reds are determined to acquire free-agent designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, although securing him may prove challenging.
Hailing from Middletown, Ohio, just 35 miles from Cincinnati, Schwarber is reportedly open to a homecoming. The Reds present him with an opportunity to enhance their youthful lineup and play for the esteemed manager Terry Francona.
Financial Constraints for the Reds
The Reds face a significant hurdle as the Philadelphia Phillies are expected to offer Schwarber a more lucrative contract.
Tim Britton from The Athletic anticipates that Schwarber may land a five-year deal worth $145 million. With Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall indicating that the team’s payroll will likely remain stable through 2025, Fangraphs estimates they could have around $20 million available.
Challenges in Acquiring Schwarber
Given Schwarber’s recent record of 56 home runs, he will command a higher annual salary than the Reds can currently afford, especially as they also need to improve their bullpen. While trading utility player Gavin Lux, projected to earn $5 million in arbitration, is an option, it would not sufficiently address the financial requirements without a special case for Schwarber.
Schwarber’s Possible Options
As Schwarber approaches his 33rd birthday on March 5, he is likely seeking his final major contract and may not offer the Reds a significant hometown discount. Larger market teams like the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox could also enter the bidding.
Reds’ Potential Appeal
Despite the financial hurdles, the Reds’ performance improved from 77 to 83 wins last season under Francona. Most key players, such as shortstop Elly De La Cruz and right fielder Noelvi Marte, are under contract through at least 2028. Adding Schwarber as the designated hitter could elevate the entire lineup.
Schwarber’s Impact on the Team
Schwarber’s power is notable; only Aaron Judge has hit more home runs over the past four seasons. If the Reds can entice him, it could significantly enhance their chances of competing. However, emotional ties in free agency rarely outweigh financial considerations, making it difficult to see how the Reds could compete financially.
Brewers Considering Freddy Peralta Trade
Meanwhile, interest in right-hander Freddy Peralta has prompted the Milwaukee Brewers to consider trade discussions. Despite affirmations from owner Mark Attanasio and general manager Matt Arnold regarding their rotation’s strength, substantial offers for Peralta could alter their plans.
