Celtics Training Camp: A New Beginning for Twiss
In the fall of 1976, the Celtics conducted their training camp at Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, coinciding with Jeff Twiss’s internship under public relations chief Howie McHugh.
A Surprising Start
Upon arrival, Twiss noticed that star forwards John Havlicek and Paul Silas were absent, as Silas was holding out for a better contract. Twiss overheard a frustrated Auerbach angrily stating, “I’m not paying Silas any more than I’m paying Havlicek!” This moment indicated the serious financial negotiations inherent in professional sports.
Quick Learning Curve
While reporters were assured Havlicek would return soon, Twiss discovered the reality when he spotted Havlicek fishing near the canal. Silently watching, Twiss realized that fishing was Havlicek’s camp pastime, showing a different side of the star.
A Path to Full-time Role
After teaching physical education for two and a half years in Vermont, Twiss pursued a sports management graduate program at UMass Amherst, leading to another internship with the Celtics in 1981. One of his responsibilities was to drive Auerbach, who Twiss humorously described as a “brutal driver.” This role soon morphed into a full-time position after an October preseason game when Auerbach offered him a job on the spot.
Tragic Loss in the Team
On June 17, 1986, the Celtics drafted Maryland standout Len Bias, who tragically died of a cocaine-induced heart attack the following day. As the public relations director, Twiss approached Auerbach to discuss the team’s response to the shocking news, showcasing Auerbach’s stoicism in the wake of personal loss.
Connecting with Players
Twiss’s rapport with players extended further with Reggie Lewis, whose unexpected death in 1993 left a profound impact. Known for his generosity, Lewis’s spirit resonated within the team and community, while Twiss remembered his unwavering dedication to local needs, revealing the compassionate nature of team members.
Bridging Generations
In 2004, when Doc Rivers was hired as coach, Twiss played a key role in smoothing communication between Rivers and star player Paul Pierce. Through their initial friction, Twiss became an intermediary, paving the way for a successful collaboration that ultimately led the Celtics to victory in the 2008 NBA Finals, exemplifying his invaluable role within the franchise.
