Sikandar Raza made history as the first cricketer from Zimbabwe to play in the SA20 league, having played for 40 teams globally and over 330 T20 matches. His arrival has revitalized the Paarl Royals after a disappointing start, turning their fortunes around following an initial 49 all-out in the season opener.
In just two matches, Raza has emerged as the second-highest wicket-taker for the Royals. His remarkable performance in his second SA20 game earned him the Player of the Match award, taking 4 wickets for 13 runs at Newlands, leading to MI Cape Town’s lowest-ever SA20 score of 88 runs.
Despite facing personal tragedy with the loss of his younger brother just before joining the Royals, Raza decided to play. He remarked that while the situation is challenging, he committed to contributing to the team, emphasizing his readiness to invest his energy and experience.
Raza believes his participation in SA20 will create opportunities for his fellow Zimbabwean players, as past successes have often paved the way for others. He feels honored to be the first Zimbabwean in the tournament and hopes to inspire more from his homeland.
Traveling across various leagues keeps Raza match-ready, particularly ahead of the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup, where Zimbabwe is set to face teams like Australia and Sri Lanka. He remains focused on training and playing diligently, knowing that outcomes depend on their efforts.
Raza acknowledges the challenge posed by stronger teams but emphasizes the importance of focusing on their game plan rather than their opponents. He asserts that as long as the team plays with heart and dedication, the results will take care of themselves.
