GREENFIELD, Iowa —
The recent tornado that struck Greenfield not only wreaked havoc on homes and businesses but also devastated the town’s beloved disc golf course placed beside Greenfield Lake. This course had long been a favorite for players of all skill levels.
In its wake, the tornado uprooted homemade baskets and destroyed the unique trees that characterized the course. Henry Uken, a member of the Des Moines Area Disc Golf Club, shared, “What made Greenfield Disc Golf special was its homemade baskets; it was simply a fun place to play.”
Upon examining the destruction, Uken and fellow community members recognized the importance of the course and committed to its restoration, aiming to improve it beyond its original state.
Renovations are currently in progress, with significant advancements already visible. So far, eighteen new baskets have been installed, and hundreds of trees have been replanted across the course.
Uken expressed optimism, noting, “It’s much like the town itself; out of the ashes, we are rising.” To support the restoration efforts, an auction of the original baskets is currently underway, with all proceeds dedicated to rejuvenating the course.
