Navdeep Saini’s Comeback Journey
Navdeep Saini hasn’t participated in an IPL match for almost three years, but he insists he’s got fresh skills to showcase. “I won’t reveal them now,” he playfully notes. “You’ll see it when I get on the field again.”
Return to the Field
At Eden Gardens on Monday, he was finally preparing for his run-up and receiving warm embraces from teammates and opponents alike, two weeks into his replacement stint with Kolkata Knight Riders. However, the excitement was cut short by rain that disrupted the evening.
A New Beginning
After two years filled with ups and downs, Saini believes his call-up from KKR marks a fresh start. “It feels like being chosen for your first IPL again,” he shares with Cricbuzz. “Life can throw challenges at you, but resilience is key.”
Struggles and Resilience
Once known for his blazing speed, pre-pandemic Saini could reach 150kph effortlessly. He committed to that pace until an injury forced him to reconsider. “I tried to tone it down for my health, but it didn’t sit well with me. Speed is my identity as a bowler,” he explains.
The Road to Recovery
Two years ago, he dislocated his shoulder during a Ranji Trophy game. Opting for rehabilitation over surgery, he took time to heal, but upon his return, he struggled. A disappointing tenure in the Delhi Premier League followed, and missing out on the Duleep Trophy further dampened his spirits.
A Glimmer of Hope
Things turned around when, just three days before the tournament, he replaced an injured Mohammad Siraj and ended up taking the third-most wickets. This resurgence restored some positivity in his career.
Looking Ahead
Saini sees his KKR opportunity as a crucial pivot in his journey, especially since he has more T20 experience than in first-class matches. He is determined to prove himself once more, aiming for another chance to showcase his talents, hoping for a recall to the India team.
A New Chapter at KKR
Now at KKR, he feels rejuvenated, surrounded by a supportive team and great coaching staff. With aspirations still intact, Saini is ready to take each opportunity step by step, all while hoping to unleash his speed once again.
