LOS ANGELES — A Relaxed Rob Ryan
Defensive coach Rob Ryan appears more relaxed than ever. Standing on the balcony of USC’s John McKay Center, with his white hair gently blowing in the summer breeze, he’s as loquacious as always.
“I’m totally different from most people,” Ryan chuckles. “And I don’t care.”
His hearty laugh reflects years of experience including stints with nine NFL teams, five major college programs, two Super Bowl rings, and countless stories to share. As the son of famed coach Buddy Ryan and brother to former NFL coach Rex Ryan, he’s drawn up defensive strategies from the Arizona desert to the Atlantic coast.
A Shift to College Football
However, coaching at USC is a new chapter for the 62-year-old, one that he hadn’t anticipated. “I honestly never thought about it,” he admits. “I was content in pro football.” As Ryan recalls his journey, he shakes his head in disbelief, noting how far he has come since his last college coaching role.
Lessons From the Past
The last time Ryan coached college football, Peyton Manning was a rookie and Ricky Williams was dominating the game as a Heisman Trophy candidate. Remembering those days, Ryan reflects on how everyone thought his defense couldn’t handle Williams, but he proved otherwise. “Ricky didn’t win the Heisman against us,” he quipped.
The Coaching Evolution
Ryan’s extensive knowledge reflects decades of experience, having learned from coaching legends like Bill Belichick. “When I was coordinating college defenses 25 years ago, we focused solely on stopping the run. Now, the game has evolved,” he notes. Ryan’s dedication persists as he embraces the modern game with enthusiasm and adaptability.
Support From Family
Rex Ryan, who supports his brother’s journey, believes his insights will greatly benefit the younger coaching staff at USC. Unlike his brother, Rob isn’t chasing a head coaching position but is committed to helping the team’s leaders achieve their vision. “He will put in the hard work without seeking the spotlight,” Rex said.
A New Opportunity at USC
Ryan found himself at USC after a coaching shake-up with the Las Vegas Raiders. Taking the opportunity during a pivotal moment in the program, he embraced the challenge. “I have loved it here. It feels like starting fresh,” he expresses.
The Joy of Coaching
Embracing his role, Ryan instills his passion for the game to his players, encouraging them to play free and enjoy the process. “I want them to love football, not dread it,” he emphasizes, reflecting his own long-standing love for the sport. “I plan to have more fun than anyone on that field.”
