Brian Robinson Jr. Joins 49ers
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Running back Brian Robinson Jr. experienced a brief adjustment period during his first practice with the San Francisco 49ers, likening it to the first day of school.
“Lost in the Hallway”
“It was like a first day of school,” Robinson stated. “I got lost in the hallway for a second, but I found my way to class.” Wearing No. 30, he participated in a rigorous 62-minute workout after transitioning from the Washington Commanders, where he had been a leading running back for three seasons.
Details of the Trade
The trade between the Niners and the Commanders, involving Robinson and a 2026 sixth-round pick, was officially announced on Sunday. Although Robinson recognized the Niners as a possible landing spot, he was surprised at how quickly he went from being Washington’s top running back to the trade block.
Preparing for a New Role
Newly appointed as San Francisco’s No. 2 running back behind Christian McCaffrey, Robinson remains focused on his goals. “I expect the same process and everything I hoped to achieve this year,” he affirmed.
Shanahan’s Confidence
Coach Kyle Shanahan expressed excitement about Robinson’s addition, noting, “We brought him here to be our [number] two back.” Shanahan’s admiration for Robinson dates back to the player’s college career, when he was a pre-draft visitor for San Francisco.
Robinson’s Performance Record
During his time with Washington, Robinson accumulated 2,329 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, along with 587 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Despite this production, the Commanders sought to enhance their running back depth, leading to his trade.
Looking Ahead
Robinson is eager to work alongside McCaffrey, aiming to form a powerful duo in the league. He acknowledged the adjustment to the Niners’ zone-heavy scheme but feels confident in his ability to contribute. “I’ve been running the ball my whole life, so I’m ready to just plug and play,” he said.
