In Monday’s “First Call,” Aaron Rodgers and Mike Tomlin expressed differing views on the run game.
Justin Fields led the Jets to victory over the Browns, while the Ravens continued their winning streak. Meanwhile, Russell Wilson is back as the Giants’ quarterback.
Additionally, there’s plenty to cover regarding local college basketball.
Diverging Opinions
Following their disappointing 25-10 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers, head coach Mike Tomlin and quarterback Aaron Rodgers shared contrasting perspectives on a crucial question: Should the team be emphasizing the run game more?
Running back Jaylen Warren stood out in an otherwise struggling offense, accumulating 70 rushing yards and 21 receiving yards on just 16 touches. However, Tomlin was dismissive when asked about increasing the run plays.
“When we’re 0 for 9 or 10 on third downs, we’re simply not going to have enough plays,” Tomlin remarked in his postgame press conference. “We’ve discussed this many times… moving on.”

Contrastingly, Rodgers had a different take. “Jaylen made some impressive plays,” Rodgers stated post-loss. “He’s a great talent. We need to give him more opportunities.”
I side with Rodgers here. From Tomlin’s viewpoint, if third-down conversions were the issue, it’s notable that Warren wasn’t utilized during any of them—even with four opportunities of 5 yards or less. This could have been a perfect chance to address both issues.
Fields’ Contribution
Former Steeler Justin Fields played a key role in his team’s victory over an AFC North rival.
In a matchup against Cleveland, Fields managed just 54 yards on 6 of 11 passing, with 42 yards coming from a touchdown that Breece Hall scored on a short screen pass.

Fields also threw an interception and added 28 rushing yards. The Jets secured the win with two return touchdowns, beating the Browns 27-20. Both teams are now at 2-7.
Russell’s Return
The New York Giants turned to former Steeler Russell Wilson during their snowy game against the Chicago Bears.
Unfortunately, Wilson’s performance fell short. He replaced Jaxson Dart in the fourth quarter while Dart was evaluated for a concussion. Wilson completed 3 of 7 passes for 45 yards, was sacked twice, and gained 12 rushing yards.
In a comeback effort, the Bears overcame a 20-10 deficit to win, dropping the Giants to 2-8 while Chicago improved to 6-3, tying for the NFC’s final playoff spot with the Lions.

Exciting College Basketball Ahead
The Pitt men’s basketball team is set to play their third game at 7 p.m. Monday, facing Eastern Michigan from the MAC.
The two teams have only met once, in a thrilling season opener in 2016 that the Panthers won 93-90 after double overtime, with notable performances from Jamel Artis and Michael Young.
Coach Jeff Capel’s squad previously defeated Youngstown State and Longwood, while EMU’s last game was a victory against Georgia State.
Additionally, Robert Morris will host Geneva at 7 p.m., coming off a surprising win over Drake last week, a team with a strong recent track record.
Duquesne Dominates
The Duquesne women’s basketball team earned victory on the road, defeating Western Michigan 72-64.
Freshman Alexis Bordas shone with 24 points, hitting five three-pointers.
