The Players Championship: Early Leaders and McIlroy’s Struggles
Sepp Straka and Sahith Theegala share the lead in a five-way tie after the first round of The Players Championship, as Rory McIlroy, the defending champion, had a slow start at TPC Sawgrass.
Maverick McNealy set the early clubhouse target with a 67, while play was briefly paused for 20 minutes due to hazardous weather conditions. Straka achieved five birdies without any bogeys, and Lee Hodges also reached five under with four birdies in a six-hole span.
Theegala joined in the tie for the clubhouse lead, making three birdies early in his round. Austin Smotherman, still out on the course, was also at five under with one hole left to play when darkness forced a suspension.
Chasing the Lead
Former Players champion Justin Thomas made three birdies in his last five holes to come close to the lead, while Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Åberg, and Xander Schauffele are all within two strokes of the leaders.
McIlroy’s Difficult Round
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler ended with a level-par 72, aiming for his third Players title in four years. McIlroy, who faced a late decision to play due to a back issue and lacked a practice round, managed only one birdie for a two-over 74.
McIlroy commented, “I don’t feel that far off. No one scored particularly well today, and I think I can get back in the mix if I shoot a good round tomorrow.”
Tight Race for Leadership
McNealy recorded six birdies against one bogey, while Straka retained his place at the top by chipping in for birdie on the 16th hole. Meanwhile, Smotherman had considered stopping earlier but decided to play through and will return to finish his round.
A tightly packed leaderboard has 29 players within four strokes of the lead, with Scheffler needing to make a birdie on the last hole to avoid starting his tournament over par. Live coverage of The Players Championship continues throughout the week on Sky Sports.
