Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry reached the 18th green at the Zurich Classic on Saturday, but were briefly halted for a weather delay before returning to finish with a stunning eagle putt from 35 feet. This puts them into a competitive position for the final round alongside other strong teams.
Regarding their preparation during the break, McIlroy shared, “The key is to not dwell on it during those 90 minutes.” They referred to last year’s highlights and discussed dinner plans, keeping the pressure off until they resumed play, ultimately resulting in a successful putt.
This marks McIlroy’s first appearance since his recent Masters victory. Lowry noted in their CBS interview, “If he’s not relaxed and happy now, he never will be.” Although McIlroy kept dinner plans a secret, he mentioned two returning favorite spots from last year’s win.
Looking ahead to Sunday, McIlroy emphasized the importance of enjoyment: “Having fun is crucial. That will help us perform our best.” Here’s a look at the dynamics as the Zurich Classic approaches its final round.
THE LEADERS
Andrew Novak and partner Ben Griffin, who are both in search of their first Tour win, took the lead with a Saturday score of 61, creating a three-shot advantage.
THE CHASERS
Jake Knapp and Frankie Capan III shot the day’s lowest round with a 60, bringing them to 24 under and a tie for second place. Knapp remarked on the importance of camaraderie in a partner format, highlighting the supportive atmosphere they maintain.
THE HEADLINERS
McIlroy and Lowry lead a group at 22 under, alongside teams of Cam Davis and Adam Svensson, plus Luke List and Henrik Norlander. Notably, last year’s runners-up, Martin Trainer and Chad Ramey, moved up the leaderboard with a final-round score of 63, reminding everyone that there’s still much to contend with in the game.
