Assaults Continue on Ukraine
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Authorities reported that Russia launched over 500 drones and approximately two dozen missiles at Ukraine overnight. This escalation coincides with ongoing discussions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defenses and advancing stalled U.S.-led peace initiatives.
Targets of the Nighttime Strikes
Zelenskyy indicated that the primary targets for these nighttime assaults were civilian infrastructures, particularly energy facilities, as winter approaches for the third consecutive year since Russia’s full-scale invasion. The Ukrainian air force reported that these attacks mainly affected western and central regions and resulted in at least five injuries.
Continued Aerial Attacks
The relentless aerial bombardments targeting civilian areas and Russia’s ground assaults aimed at overwhelming Ukrainian defenses along a 1,000-kilometer front line persist, despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to halt the conflict. While Zelenskyy has shown willingness to engage in ceasefire negotiations and direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin remains skeptical.
Putin’s Public Comments
During a press conference in Beijing, Putin expressed that a sensible resolution to the conflict could be achieved, acknowledging Trump’s “sincere desire” for peace. He suggested that a future meeting with Zelenskyy could take place in Moscow, but only if substantial groundwork was laid beforehand.
Zelenskyy’s Response
Zelenskyy characterized the recent drone strikes as a display of Russia’s defiance, stating on Telegram that “Putin is demonstrating his impunity.” He called for stronger sanctions against Russia, emphasizing that the lack of sufficient economic pressure has allowed the aggression to continue.
Diplomatic Efforts in Beijing
Amid these tensions, Putin met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in China, as well as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Washington claims these nations support Russia’s military efforts. The European Union’s foreign policy chief noted that China plays a crucial role in supplying Russia with significant dual-use imports that enhance its invasion capabilities.
Discussion of Military Aid
Zelenskyy is currently in Denmark discussing new military aid with Northern European and Baltic countries. He reported significant financial commitments for U.S.-sourced weaponry. Meanwhile, British Defense Secretary John Healey and French President Emmanuel Macron are engaged in discussions to fortify Ukraine’s military capabilities, as they seek to establish postwar security guarantees in collaboration with the United States.
