Sal Stewart’s Major League Debut
CINCINNATI – On Monday, Sal Stewart, the top prospect for the Reds, arrived at Great American Ball Park for his first major league call-up. The slugging infielder exuded the same confidence and energy he showcased during his time in the Minor Leagues.
Reds manager commented, “I would feel the same way if I could hit like that.” This indicates the high expectations surrounding Stewart as he transitions into the big leagues.
Position Challenges
Despite Stewart’s talents, the Reds have established players occupying his positions: Hayes at third base, Matt McLain at second, and Spencer Steer at first. Notably, Steer had a day off on Monday, having been managing a sore quadriceps.
Training and Adaptation
After the acquisition of Hayes, a 2023 National League Gold Glove Award winner, Stewart began training at first base with the Louisville team. He made two starts totaling 17 innings at this position, receiving guidance from coaches Bryan LaHair and Julio Morillo, as well as former Reds first baseman.
“It helped me significantly,” Stewart shared. “Speaking with Yonder who played here for the Reds proved invaluable while learning throughout the process.”
Offensive Potential
The Reds, currently four games behind the Mets in the NL Wild Card race, have faced difficulties in generating power and home runs this season. Stewart’s ability to quickly adapt from the Minor Leagues to the Majors might provide the offensive boost the team needs.
Stewart’s Focus and Determination
Expressing his joy, Stewart stated, “All my hard work has led me to this moment. I’m thrilled, but I need to keep my emotions in check as we all strive for our collective goals up here.” His determination reflects the spirit of the team as they pursue success in the remainder of the season.
