Confidence in Communication
The chairman of Resorts World Las Vegas expressed that Nevada gaming regulators can trust the ongoing dialogue between local leadership and its parent company, Genting Berhad, based in Malaysia.
Addressing Governance Concerns
Former Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval recently discussed issues regarding governance and compliance that have arisen since the resort opened in June 2021, which led to a $10.5 million penalty linked to dealings with an illegal bookmaker.
Strengthening Corporate Governance
To enhance corporate governance and business strategy, Genting Berhad established a Las Vegas board in December 2024. This board now includes residents Sandoval and gaming attorney A.G. Burnett, who were approved by the Nevada Gaming Commission. The Commission also sanctioned Genting CEO Kong Han Tan and Genting Plantations CEO Keon Hui Lim to join the board, with their prior licensing waiving their meeting appearance.
Regular Meetings and Engagement
Sandoval stated that he participated in a meeting at 10:30 p.m. due to the time difference with Malaysia. He noted, “Our board and I are in regular contact with Genting Berhad. You can trust the level of engagement, and I’ve been pleased with the dialogue between management on-site and Genting executives.”
Compliance Oversight
Burnett highlighted the exceptional work of Resorts World’s chief compliance officer, Jennifer Roberts, who addresses compliance issues at board meetings. He emphasized that, due to the property’s past, there is intense scrutiny to ensure adherence to all regulations established by the Gaming Control Board and Commission to prevent past mistakes from recurring.
Focus on Anti-Money Laundering
Burnett clarified that the issues were not due to failures in Resorts World’s regulatory compliance program, but rather within the anti-money-laundering oversight group. He noted improved collaboration between the AML committee and the compliance committee.
Political Pressure and Integrity
In addressing political pressures faced during his career, Burnett recalled an incident in 2017 where political pressure was placed on the Gaming Control Board regarding litigation with Las Vegas Sands. He explained the importance of maintaining integrity, stating, “Regulators must stand firm in the face of politics,” and expressing pride in the decision to not succumb to external pressures.
