Victor Perez Discusses His Shift to LIV Golf
In a candid interview, Victor Perez reveals his decision to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf, explaining the pressures that influenced him. He describes a recent confrontation with PGA Tour officials and shares his thoughts on his future with the DP World Tour.
Perez, now settled in his home gym while his young daughter sleeps nearby, humorously notes, “I’ve basically been kicked out of my own house.” He’s taking a moment to relax after the whirlwind surrounding his transition to LIV Golf was announced.
Following his resignation from the PGA Tour, he retreated to Edinburgh and is preparing for a family trip to London before heading to the Bahamas for an early Christmas. He emphasizes the importance of a structured pre-season leading up to his LIV Golf debut in Riyadh next February.
Reflecting on last season, Perez admits, “It’s tough to gauge where I stand compared to others with it being my first season.” He believes his consistency will be a boon for the team-based format of LIV Golf, where four scores count towards the team’s total.
Perez candidly shares that the past year was challenging, marked by inconsistencies in his performance and confusion over qualification criteria. He highlights how the PGA Tour’s evolving rules affected his ability to secure a stable spot and led him to pursue opportunities outside the Tour.
Describing his discussions with PGA Tour leadership, he shares his frustrations about the changes implemented, which he felt were unfair to players lower on the ranks. Ultimately, this led him to consider the Cleeks Golf Club as a promising alternative.
Perez recognizes the appeal of LIV Golf, including the lucrative purses and the clarity of its schedule. While he acknowledges the challenges of becoming a LIV player, particularly regarding access to major tournaments, he remains optimistic about the stability and opportunities this new path affords him and his family.
