PHILADELPHIA — Phillies Struggle Early but Find a Way to Win
The Phillies faced another slow start as they failed to score in the first three innings for the fifth consecutive game. This included striking out four times with the bases loaded. Despite this, manager Rob Thomson maintained a lighthearted approach after their win on Wednesday, mentioning Edmundo Sosa, who has been one of baseball’s most impressive hitters lately, likely won’t be in the lineup for Thursday’s game.
“I’d like to play him,” Thomson joked. “I’m going to call MLB and see if we can play 10 guys.”
Although the season is only five games in, the Phillies secured a 5-1 victory against a Colorado Rockies team that appears to be struggling at the bottom of the standings. The lower part of the lineup showed resilience, with Sosa and Johan Rojas reaching base six times together. While the team has committed to Bryson Stott at second base and Brandon Marsh in center field, this week hasn’t changed their plans.
Nevertheless, Thomson’s strategic options could come in handy over the long season. Sosa and Rojas may well serve as crucial reserves, capable of aiding the team through the demands of a 162-game schedule.
“Every player on this team is really good,” pitcher Zack Wheeler said after striking out ten batters in seven innings. “It’s tough to get on this team because of that. Our bench could start on many teams, and they’re performing impressively right now. Sosa is one of my favorite players to watch because of how hard he plays and his current form.”
Sosa continues to impress, boasting a 9-for-15 start to the season. His performance culminated in a two-run double during the eighth inning, compensating for the other star players who faltered with the bases loaded. “Sosa has probably been our best hitter through these five games,” Trea Turner remarked. “He’s been incredible. The guys contributed significantly tonight.”
Rojas, batting ninth and playing center, also made an impact, going 2-for-2 with a walk. His efforts included a productive seven-pitch at-bat and a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt. Thomson praised Rojas’s performance, noting that he played crucial roles moving runners and making defensive plays. Both players have potential to make an impact, although they’ll return to the bench against right-handed starters on Thursday. As the season progresses, there may be opportunities for either player to break into a regular starting role.
