St Lucia Kings Topple Trinbago Knight Riders
Jelani Beckles
Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) faced a disappointing loss at home when they were defeated by the St Lucia Kings in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League, held at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on September 3. Thousands of TKR supporters were left heartbroken as the Kings spoiled their plans for a fifth consecutive home victory.
Despite entering the match as the tournament leaders, TKR struggled with the bat, posting only 109 runs in 18.1 overs. The Kings chased down the target comfortably, finishing at 112 for 3 in just 11.1 overs.
This win allowed the Kings to overtake TKR in the standings, bringing both teams to 12 points, yet the Kings lead with a superior net run rate. The match was anticipated to be tightly contested due to both teams’ strong performances throughout the tournament.
The Kings began their chase with a slight hiccup, losing Johnson Charles early. However, Tim Seifert continued his excellent form by scoring 36 off 17 balls, backed by Ackeem Auguste, who contributed 28 runs. The partnership saw the Kings typically reach 50 runs quickly at the start of their innings.
In contrast, TKR had a nightmarish start. Their opening batsmen failed to deliver, with Colin Munro dismissed for a duck and Darren Bravo scoring just 18 runs before getting caught out. The team found themselves in trouble early on, with wickets tumbling as they slumped to 41 for 4 in just over six overs.
Despite a brief partnership between Kieron Pollard and Nicholas Pooran, TKR could not recover from their early setbacks. Their innings concluded at 109, their lowest score of the season, as the Kings’ bowlers exploited the conditions effectively.
Upcoming, TKR will face the Amazon Warriors on September 6 in Guyana.
Summarised scores:
TKR 109 (18.1 overs) (Nicholas Pooran 30, Nathan Edward 17; Tabraiz Shamsi 3/12, Roston Chase 2/19, Khary Pierre 2/31, Delano Potgieter 2/6) vs ST LUCIA KINGS 112/3 (11.1 overs) (Tim Seifert 36, Ackeem Auguste 28, R Chase 27 not out; Sunil Narine 2/28). Kings won by seven wickets.
