Experiencing the Oscars: A Unique Perspective
As I climb the long red staircase at the Dolby Theater, I am surrounded by women in stunning gowns—some are streaming live on their phones, while others pose for memorable photos. It feels like a scene straight out of a movie.
I’m here on the Oscars’ red carpet in Hollywood, California, to relay messages of support for the U.S. military to American Forces Network (AFN) television, which broadcasts to American service members and their families stationed abroad.
With the clock ticking toward 1 p.m., I rush back to our media section, maneuvering like Cinderella in search of essentials such as water and a restroom.
Upon returning, I find my colleagues capturing photos on the red carpet, and an air of excitement fills the atmosphere. We momentarily lose track of time until an elegantly dressed woman informs us, “We need you in your designated position.”
As we huddle in our assigned corner, raindrops begin to fall onto the transparent tarp sheltering us. The tarp slopes down, pooling water in spots above a row of brightly colored lights, inciting worried murmurs among the crowd who have seen too many films.
Soon, staff clad in formal attire approach us, wielding walkie-talkies, calling for “a pole” to assist. Men rush in with long black poles, attempting to shift the pooled water away from the lights and into the streets below.
As the scene unfolds, announcements of celebrity arrivals echo in the background, leading to a steady trickle of stars. As some are introduced, we seize opportunities to ask for a quick shout-out to the troops. Responses are warm and receptive, affirming their support.
Gradually, I become more conscious of my dual role: capturing visuals and writing a story. Feeling reassured with a good collection of images, I adjust my position to capture better action amidst the growing influx of stars.
Among the big names, Janelle Monáe stands out in a glimmering hooded silver dress, accompanied by a sea of cameras. Kelly Marie Tran makes time for a troop shout-out before disappearing into the crowd. Familiar faces continue to pass by: Margot Robbie, Mindy Kaling, Maya Rudolph, Adam Driver, and more!
