Spring Optimism and NFL Draft Insights
As spring ushers in hope and renewal, Pittsburgh’s landscapes are blooming just as the NFL Draft approaches at the end of April. However, new Steelers coach Mike McCarthy is focused on more than just the season’s bright beginnings.
Looking Ahead for December and January
“Ultimately, the most crucial games are in December and January,” McCarthy stated recently. He emphasized that succeeding in those outdoor conditions necessitates a specific style of play.
Targeting the Right Quarterback
McCarthy and general manager Omar Khan aim to find an “AFC North quarterback” to lead the Steelers. Although the draft was initially seen as the best path to acquiring this quarterback, the 2026 class now appears less impressive than anticipated.
Possible Return of Veteran Quarterbacks
The Steelers may consider bringing back 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers for the starting role in 2026, along with veteran Mason Rudolph and last year’s sixth-round selection, Will Howard. This does not rule out the possibility of drafting a quarterback later this month.
Drew Allar: A Local Contender
The search may focus on Drew Allar, who hails from Medina, Ohio, and played at Penn State. Allar boasts notable physical attributes, including the largest hands (9⅞ inches) and long arms (32¾ inches) among quarterbacks at the combine, along with strong arm strength.
Mixed Reviews on Allar’s Potential
ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper noted Allar’s potential, praising his ability to make tight throws and his effortless style. Although he could be the third quarterback drafted, concerns linger over his performance in important college games.
Comparisons with Other Quarterbacks
Allar is competing against Garrett Nussmeier of LSU and Carson Beck from Miami to be the third quarterback chosen. Meanwhile, Alabama’s Ty Simpson, projected to be a first-round pick, presents a different profile that may not align with the ‘AFC North’ standards prized by the Steelers.
