Allegations Against Phoenix Suns Team Employee
In a recent lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Arizona, a staff member of the Phoenix Suns, Gene Traylor, claims he faced discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. This lawsuit marks the fourth such case against the Suns from a current or former employee in the last seven months.
Background of the Lawsuit
Traylor, who serves as the director of safety, security, and risk management, joined the organization in January 2023. His primary responsibilities included assessing safety, financial, and reputational risks. Following a presentation he submitted in 2023, detailing several incidents, he alleges that the management retaliated against him by demoting him and discouraging him from taking protected leave after a cancer diagnosis.
Incidents Noted in the Complaint
The presentation highlighted various incidents, such as:
- A former part-time employee stealing over $40,000 in goods in March 2023.
- A disruption by a “disgruntled subject” during a team photo-op in April 2023.
- A notable harassment incident involving former player Brittney Griner in June 2023, causing a delay in a team flight.
Security Concerns Raised
The lawsuit also mentions failed security tests conducted by the Phoenix Police Department, where undercover officers successfully brought weapons into the arena undetected. As a result, Traylor filed complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Arizona Attorney General’s office in November 2024. He is now seeking undisclosed damages.
Suns’ Response to Allegations
The Suns organization has responded to the allegations by questioning the credibility of Traylor’s attorneys, focusing on attorney Sheree Wright’s disciplinary history. The team characterized the claims as “absurd” and framing them as a tactic to deflect accountability.
Previous Lawsuits Against the Suns
Traylor’s case isn’t isolated. There have been other lawsuits filed by former employees, including Andrea Trischan and Jason Cope, both alleging discrimination, harassment, and wrongful termination. Trischan is seeking $60 million in damages while Cope aims for undisclosed damages for claims of age discrimination.
Efforts to Reform Workplace Culture
These legal challenges arise amidst the Suns’ efforts to improve workplace culture following an NBA investigation into misconduct involving previous ownership. New owner Mat Ishbia has expressed a commitment to altering the team’s culture and promoting a positive work environment for employees.
