Thompson Takes Lead at John Deere Classic
Davis Thompson clinched a birdie with a 10-foot putt on the 18th hole Saturday, breaking a tie that briefly saw 10 players sharing the lead. This achievement allowed him to finish with a score of 4-under 67 on a challenging golf course, putting him one shot ahead in the John Deere Classic.
Final Putt Under Pressure
As Thompson prepared for his final putt, he was one of five players vying for the top position, following Brian Campbell’s successful 30-foot birdie putt earlier. Thompson’s last birdie brought his total to 15-under 198, leaving him ahead of Campbell, Max Homa, Emiliano Grillo, and David Lipsky, each of whom recorded a round of 68.
Ghim Struggles
The only player out of contention was Doug Ghim, who led after 36 holes but faltered with two bogeys and no birdies over his final 10 holes, finishing with a score of 74 and dropping out of the top 20.
Potential to Win Back-to-Back
Thompson’s birdie finish came after he missed an 8-foot eagle attempt on the par-5 17th hole. He hopes to become the first player since Steve Stricker, who won three consecutive titles from 2009 to 2011, to win back-to-back at the John Deere Classic.
Opportunity for the British Open
A victory would also elevate Thompson to the top of the alternate list for the British Open, enhancing his chances of participating based on the next world rankings.
Competitive Field Ahead
However, with numerous challengers still in the running, Thompson acknowledges that the final round will be a tough battle. He expressed enthusiasm about maintaining momentum into Sunday.
Close Competition
Among the players trailing by three shots are Camilo Villegas (69) and Austin Eckroat (67), with others like Matt Kuchar (67) and Auburn junior Jackson Koivun four strokes back. Notably, only David Lipsky, Koivun, and Kevin Roy among the top 14 players have yet to secure a win on the PGA Tour.
