MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — The peak of sprint car racing’s fiercest rivalry is upon us.
All attention is drawn to Williams Grove Speedway for the 63rd edition of the J&S Classics National Open. The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series is set to hit this historic track, while the Pennsylvania Posse gears up to protect their home ground against challengers from across the country.
Fans are ready to flock to Williams Grove this weekend (Oct. 3-4) to create an unmatched atmosphere. Expect boos aimed at World of Outlaws drivers as they pass Beerhill, alongside cheers for the local heroes. Allegiances often set aside, what matters this week for Pennsylvania supporters is to see one of their own finish in victory lane.
POSSE EDGE
This season, Mother Nature has limited the encounters between the World of Outlaws and the PA Posse, but heading into the National Open, the locals hold the edge.
Following the World of Outlaws’ initial triumph when Michael “Buddy” Kofoid won the Gettysburg Clash at Lincoln Speedway in May, Anthony Macri leveled the score at Williams Grove shortly after. Most recently in July, it was Macri again, putting the Posse ahead after a victory at BAPS Motor Speedway.
OUTLAWS’ REIGN
Although the Posse leads this year’s rivalry, the bragging rights for the National Open lie with the World of Outlaws.
Carson Macedo and the Jason Johnson Racing team clinched that title last year. The Lemoore, Calif. native overtook Anthony Macri and fended off a late charge from Sheldon Haudenschild, marking his second win in this prestigious event.
RECORD HOLDER SCHATZ
Donny Schatz, recognized for his unmatched success, holds the record for the most National Open victories.
The ten-time series champion has six titles to his name (2000, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2012, 2020) and finished second four times. He aims for a record-extending seventh crown this weekend amidst recent changes in his racing partnerships.
GRAVEL’S STRONG POSITION
While Schatz has a storied history, David Gravel appears to be the top contender among current World of Outlaws racers this weekend.
The reigning series champion has been performing exceptionally as he seeks another title with Big Game Motorsports. With 15 victories and a stellar average finish of 3.51 over 59 races this season, Gravel has a strong track record at Williams Grove, where he previously won the National Open twice.
NEW CHAMPIONS ON THE HORIZON
Several active competitors in the World of Outlaws series might rise as new champions this National Open.
Sheldon Haudenschild has consistently placed in the top five at this event, aiming for his first National Open title. Logan Schuchart is another contender eager for the home turf win, having achieved podium finishes in previous years.
Michael “Buddy” Kofoid and his team have been formidable this year, proving their mettle at various tracks.
POWERFUL POSSE
For the PA Posse, the National Open is the coveted prize, and several skilled local drivers will be vying for victory.
Legend Lance Dewease aims to make history with a potential sixth title, while Danny Dietrich brings his prior experience from his 2016 win into this year’s competition. Other strong contenders include Chase Dietz and Freddie Rahmer, who are also eager for success on home soil.
INTERESTING INVADERS
The spotlight isn’t solely on the World of Outlaws and the Pennsylvania Posse; various skilled invaders are set to challenge this weekend.
Ryan Timms, the 2025 Knoxville Nationals champion, will debut at the National Open. Daryn Pittman, despite hailing from Oklahoma, will compete in a prominent Pennsylvania team, eager for his first title. Additionally, Corey Day and Giovanni Scelzi are set to make their own mark at Williams Grove this weekend.
