Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Disappointing IPL Season
After an impressive season last year, Sunrisers Hyderabad entered the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) as strong contenders for the title, having bolstered their batting lineup during the auctions. They kicked off the season with a remarkable second-highest total ever (286 against Rajasthan Royals) and ended with a close third (278 against Kolkata Knight Riders). However, their journey through the season was far from smooth.
It’s an understatement to say that SRH has underperformed this season, a sentiment echoed by captain Pat Cummins. The excitement around their potential to reach 300 runs intensified following Ishan Kishan’s century against RR, a match Cummins now feels set unrealistically high expectations.
In an exclusive interview with The Hindu, Cummins discussed the pressures of expectation, the prospects for squad changes, and reflectively shared insights about Australia’s ODI World Cup triumph on Indian grounds in 2023.
Individual Experience Amidst Team Pressure
The results have not met our expectations, but aside from that, it’s been a fantastic experience. We’ve maintained a similar squad from last year, with a few new additions, which has made it enjoyable. I take pride in how well everyone has bonded and trained together. Our opening match set a high bar with our staggering score.
Coping with Tactical Challenges
As the only overseas captain this season, Cummins noted that the pressure didn’t significantly change due to previous leadership experience. He discussed major tactical decisions, like dropping Mohammad Shami and taking the new ball himself to adapt to the challenging pitch conditions in Hyderabad.
Learning and Adapting Under Pressure
Having numerous games in quick succession provides a chance to learn and improve rapidly, even though the team may have been slow to adapt. Cummins emphasized the importance of team dynamics and communication, especially with younger players during this tough season.
Balancing Personal Life and Professional Challenges
Outside the field, Cummins found ways to unwind with family and friends, engaging in activities like swimming, golf, and casual outings. When rumors arose about him leaving the team after dropping his family at the airport, he remained unfazed, asserting his focus on the team’s objectives.
Future Vision and the World Test Championship
Looking ahead, Cummins reflected on the potential for a squad overhaul but emphasized that the team’s core remains strong, with adjustments more focused on their playing style rather than personnel changes. With the World Test Championship final approaching, the excitement to compete again as a team remains high, as they aim to defend their title against South Africa.
A Memorable World Cup Journey
Cummins fondly recalled the 2023 ODI World Cup, particularly the defining moments, such as Glenn Maxwell’s double century against Afghanistan. This exemplified the spirit and resilience of the team throughout the tournament.
