Tiger Woods and His Role in the Ryder Cup
Tiger Woods may have declined the captaincy for Team USA, but that doesn’t mean he won’t influence this month’s Ryder Cup.
Fans had hoped the 15-time major champion would lead the Americans at Bethpage Black, but he ultimately turned down the role last year due to other commitments.
However, at 49, Woods is reportedly still contributing behind the scenes, stepping into an advisory position as the team prepares for their match against Europe, as noted by Golf.com.
A source revealed that Woods is being consulted and feels involved in Keegan Bradley’s decisions, highlighting a balanced level of influence without overshadowing the captain’s authority.
Woods has even endorsed Bradley’s recent captain picks, praising his press conference. Speculation arose that Bradley might choose himself as a playing captain given his current form on the PGA Tour, and Woods was available to advise on this decision. “He’s been incredibly helpful throughout this process,” Bradley said.
Woods, who was a playing captain at the 2019 President’s Cup, has participated in eight Ryder Cups, holding a record of 13 wins, 21 losses, and three ties. Despite not attending the last two Ryder Cups, Woods’ influence remained strong, and his insights are sought after by Team USA.
Zach Johnson acknowledged Woods as a valuable resource ahead of the 2023 tournament in Rome, emphasizing Woods’ deep commitment to the team and his experience. Although Woods won’t be present in person, his past contributions, including motivating texts during previous competitions, underscore his ongoing commitment to Team USA.
