The NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) era in college basketball presents some challenges, yet it also encourages players who might have opted for the NBA Draft to return to college, either with their original teams or by transferring through the portal.
This year, only 106 players declared for the 2025 NBA Draft, marking the lowest figure since 2015 when just 91 players chose to turn pro. This offseason has seen examples like Texas Tech’s JT Toppin, who decided not to pursue the draft after securing a significant NIL deal.
As the May 28 deadline for draft decisions approaches, several players in this year’s class are weighing their options. One notable player is Florida’s starting center Alex Condon, a key contributor to the Gators’ national title run. Currently projected as a borderline late first-round pick, Condon’s return could elevate Florida to a preseason top-five ranking.
Alex Condon, Florida
2024-25 Season Stats: GP: 37 | PPG: 10.6 | RPG: 7.5 | APG: 2.2
Spending another year in college could greatly enhance Condon’s draft prospects. At 6-foot-11, he has been projected to land at the end of the first round, but staying in school could see him slipping into the second round. By remaining at Florida, he would bolster what is expected to be the nation’s strongest frontcourt.
Jaden Byrd, San Diego State
2024-25 Season Stats: GP: 30 | PPG: 12.3 | RPG: 4.4 | APG: 2.7
The 6-foot-7 wing had a breakthrough season but still has room to grow before entering the draft. Byrd logged 30 starts and posted career-best stats across various categories. Although a second-round pick, he may significantly improve his stock by staying in college, especially if he becomes the go-to player at San Diego State.
Oweh, Kentucky
2024-25 Season Stats: GP: 36 | PPG: 16.2 | RPG: 4.7 | APG: 1.7
There are solid reasons for Oweh to return to school, especially since breaking into the first round seems unlikely. His standout performance in his first season could contribute to his development. If he stays, he would likely emerge as Kentucky’s top player and could contend for SEC Player of the Year in his sophomore year.
Jaden Pettiford, Auburn
2024-25 Season Stats: GP: 38 | PPG: 11.6 | RPG: 2.2 | APG: 3.0
Pettiford has the potential for an All-American season if he chooses to return to Auburn. After a strong showing at the NBA Draft Combine, he may not secure a first-round guarantee, making another year of development a wise choice.
Uzan, Houston
2024-25 Season Stats: GP: 40 | PPG: 11.4 | RPG: 3.1 | APG: 4.3
Uzan showed marked improvement in his first season with the Cougars and excelled as their top 3-point shooter. Returning could boost his draft position as he aims to overcome a less favorable NCAA Tournament performance. With Houston likely to be a top contender next season, Uzan’s return can enhance his overall game and help solidify the team’s chances for a title run.
